Zara Larsson Clarifies Comments After Taylor Swift Fan Outrage

Destiney A

On April 3, Zara Larsson posted a statement on Instagram addressing fan backlash following her recent interview with The Guardian. In the interview, the Swedish pop star discussed music charts and commented on Taylor Swift fans.

Larsson explained that she referenced Taylor Swift because "no one plays the chart game like Taylor Swift lol."

"She’s literally the best at it and everyone knows that," she wrote.

In the original Guardian interview, the "Lush Life" singer said that "playing the chart game is so dead to me," adding that "no one's looking at the charts but industry people and maybe Taylor Swift fans."

In an Instagram post, Zara Larsson revealed that while she believes she now has "some cultural value in pop music" — something she's never experienced at this level — she doesn't feel she's in a position to influence the charts.

The 28-year-old singer admitted that chart performance still matters to her, despite her previous comments.

"I still think you can be an amazing artist and not chart," she wrote. "Those things are not mutually exclusive to me, and they shouldn't be to any fans either."

Larsson also confirmed she plans to use chart strategies for her upcoming releases, including releasing at least two different covers for the physical editions of her next project after Midnight Sun.

She ended her statement by directly asking fans for their support in achieving chart success: "I still want number one! Please make Midnight Sun #1 please!!!!!!!!!!! That would be so mega plzzzz!!!!!"

Larsson released her fifth studio album, Midnight Sun, in September 2025. The project includes the singles "Pretty Ugly," "Midnight Sun," and "Crush."

Her collaboration with PinkPantheress, "Stateside," reached No. 1 on both the Billboard Global 200 and the Billboard Global Excl. U.S. charts in early 2026. She also earned a 2026 GRAMMY nomination for Best Dance/Electronic Recording for the title track from her album Midnight Sun.
